We Discover, We Design, We Work Together
Like all great entrepreneurial success stories, Grainwell came about almost by accident. When founders Melyssa, Michele, and Christine Kirn started their first business, Olivia Lane Designs, their product line consisted of personalizable gifts, such as drinkware and children’s and adult apparel, as well as wedding and event décor, fashion accessories and wooden signs. As the sisters began to incorporate more handmade wooden products into their product offerings, it became evident that in order to effectively expand their business and reach new audiences, they needed to create a new business just for their wooden products.
Grainwell, which they established in September of 2014, now offers a huge selection of barn wood décor, floating wood décor, ornaments, framed wooden artwork, and more. The business is owned and operated by the three sisters, who take care of everything from procuring the wood to selling the finished product, and everything in between.
A Family Business
Grainwell is owned and operated by all three sisters: Christine, Melyssa, and Michele. While none of them had special plans for becoming an entrepreneur, their skills and educational backgrounds have given them the knowledge necessary for success. Melyssa operates as Head of Design and holds a BFA in graphic design from the University of Dayton. Michele, the original founder of Olivia Lane, is Head of Marketing and Sales. She holds a BS in nursing from the University of Kentucky and an MS in nursing from Xavier University. Christine graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in architecture and a minor in visual studies. She is the Head of Manufacturing and Production. We can’t forget Dakota, their dog who is the Head of Greeting Customers!

Wondering where the wood comes from? While much of the wood is purchased, some of it comes from dumpster diving to barn breakdowns. All of the wood is inspected for uniqueness and then transformed into a one-of-a-kind piece. The Barnwood comes from Kentucky and Indiana, and the sisters work hard to support their local economy by striving to get all the materials needed to run their business from local vendors, from the wood that they use for their products to the shipping supplies.
