Do I Need a Wedding Planner?

If you’re planning a huge, extravagant wedding with a large bridal party, hundreds of guests, and opulent décor, then you’re probably not wondering if you need a wedding planner; no matter how willing your friends and family are to help prepare for the big day, there’s no substitute for a professional. But what if your dream wedding is a smaller, more intimate affair? Do you still need a wedding planner, or would hiring one simply be an unnecessary added expense?

If you’re truly planning a bare-bones, ceremony-in-mom-and-dad’s-backyard wedding, then chances are that you’ll be just fine going it alone. However, even if your wedding plans are pretty tame compared to the ideas put forth by bridal magazines and social media gurus, you might still want to consider hiring a professional wedding planner.

Wedding Planners Don’t Have to Be Expensive

First things first: the money. Depending on your budget and needs, you may choose to hire a full-scale wedding planner or a day-of wedding planner. A full-scale wedding planner takes care of every single detail from beginning to end. They’ll create the atmosphere for the ceremony and reception, attend meetings with you, and even make decisions on your behalf. On the day of the wedding, they’ll make sure everything is organized and running smoothly, ensuring that everyone and everything is in the right place at the right time. You can expect between 10 and 20 percent of your budget to go toward paying for a full-scale wedding planner.

A day-of planner, on the other hand, has much fewer responsibilities. They’ll make sure your wedding day goes to plan by creating a timeline, confirming vendors, and taking care of those last-minute surprises that inevitably pop up. Depending on where you live, you can expect to pay a flat rate between $500 and $2000 for a day-of planner.

If the idea of planning a wedding, especially if you have no experience with event planning, has you feeling completely overwhelmed, then hiring a wedding planner is money well spent.

They Save You a Lot of Time and Frustration

There are a ton of vendors out there, and doing all the research necessary to ensure that your big day isn’t a big, drama-filled nightmare is incredibly time-consuming. A wedding planner has already vetted all of your local vendors and knows exactly who you can trust and who will take you for a ride. By working with a wedding planner, you can be sure that you are getting the best value for your money.

They Free You and Your Loved Ones Up to Enjoy the Day

Your friends and family have already said that they’re happy to help with anything that needs to be done for the day of the wedding. But what happens when another commitment pulls them away from providing the assistance they promised? What if their idea of helping is vastly different from what you had in mind? Hiring someone whose actual job is to take care of all the jobs you’d rather delegate is a simple way to preserve the peace and avoid wedding day drama.
