Home Decor Trends

It’s a new year, and with the new year comes new design trends. Here are a few of the biggest home decor trends that are cropping up in 2018.

Heavy Cabinetry

Remember when open shelving in the kitchen was a big thing? Open shelving can be fantastic for tiny kitchens or kitchens that have unconventional layouts that don’t lend themselves easily to traditional cabinets. And of course, this type of storage looks beautiful in farmhouse kitchens. Unfortunately, like most trends, open shelving was way overdone. Homeowners discovered that although open shelves provide a light and, well, open look, they have disadvantages. If you use your stove often, then you’ll discover that your dishes will often end up with a greasy residue. Add to that the layer of dust that will inevitably accumulate on those high, more infrequently used pieces, and you’ll find yourself cursing the day you swapped out cabinetry for shelving.

Heavy cabinetry is back in style, and homeowners are switching out open shelving for heavy cabinetry with white-, cream-, and gray-toned finishes, as well as wood grain tones.

Jewel Tones

Fall and winter saw a surge in the popularity of the use of jewel tones in decorating, and this year’s warmer seasons seem to be following suit. Don’t want to commit to purchasing an expensive sofa in a bold color or painting your walls a deep emerald green? Just toss in a few colorful throw pillows or let your wall art (like our customizable prints and canvases) bring in those warm, vibrant hues to achieve the same look.

Natural Elements

Natural elements like wooden bowls, live plants, water features, and stone never really go out of style, but they’re especially popular this year. Incorporating eco-friendly natural elements into your décor is a great way to connect with the natural world around you while giving your home a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Wondering where to begin? In our shop, you’ll find our line of customizable soundwave art that is constructed from solid wood. The one-of-a-kind art, which is crafted by an awesome Kentucky-based, family-operated business called Grainwell, is constructed from reclaimed barn wood, beautiful birch, or solid walnut. Like our other wall art, the wood art is customized with your unique message and offers beautiful quality that will never go out of style. Learn more about Grainwell.

Perfect Imperfection

“Perfect Imperfection,” conveniently enough, is a trend that’s once again enjoying its day in the sun. It’s a departure from magazine-ready, “a place for everything and everything in its place” style in favor of a more lived-in vibe. The Japanese mastered the look in the 15th century, referring to it as “wabi-sabi,” which basically means to embrace the effects of time on things. Furniture and décor that shows signs of wear or are “perfectly imperfect” are preferred over new items in pristine condition. Think distressed rugs, messy beds, handmade pieces, and wrinkly linens. How’s that for earth-friendly and budget-friendly, not to mention easy to pull off?

This year’s design trends are all about bringing together comfort, practicality, and style, and adding a few of these elements to your décor can make a big impact.
