6 Campgrounds That Shouldn’t Be Missed

Summer is in the air! As students are finishing school, many families are loading up their camping gear and going off the grid (well, as “off the grid” as any of us ever go anymore). Just in case you’re looking for some new places to explore, we’ve rounded up a list of six of the most popular parks and campgrounds in America.

Cave Springs Campground, Sedona AZ

The picture I took above while hiking in Sedona is enough to explain why it is my favorite place to visit, so much so that I go at least once a year just to hike. Situated in the scenic Oak Creek Canyon, Cave Springs is a beautiful park that is surrounded by red sandstone walls, several trails, and beautiful canyon slopes. Its trout-stocked stream is popular among fishing enthusiasts, and it also offers hiking, biking, swimming and birdwatching opportunities for when the fish aren’t biting. The campground is located just a short drive from Slide Rock State Park, which has been recognized as having one of the country’s best swimming spots.

Pro tip: Sedona offers some of the best hiking in the United States, if you have a chance visit some of my favorite: Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Devil’s Bridge

Ludington State Park, Ludington MI

If scenic sand dunes, wildlife-filled marshlands and a beautiful shoreline is your idea of the perfect getaway, then Ludington State Park is the spot for you. This 5300-acre park is situated between Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake, with beautiful beaches on the shores of both bodies of water. The campground offers both rustic and modern sites, including a hike-in only campground.

Carolina Hemlocks, Burnsville NC

River views, tubing, trout fishing, hiking and biking trails are the reason that camping at the Carolina Hemlocks is an annual tradition for so many nature lovers. The park is situated in the Appalachian District of the Pisgah National Forest, near the Blue Ridge Parkway. It offers both modern and primitive campgrounds, which are sure to appeal to nearly any camper.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg TN

Straddling the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers beautiful sights and easy access to a ton of amenities. With trails that are lined with wildflowers that bloom throughout the year, scenic waterfalls and an onsite historic mill, the park offers plenty to keep its visitors busy. If you’re lucky enough to visit the park this year, be sure to check out Cades Cove, an isolated valley that features an abundance of wildlife and several restored 18th and 19th century structures. The valley was home to numerous settlers before the formation of the national park.

Pro tip: If you visit Cades Cove you must take the 5.2 mile hike to Abrams Falls.

Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell IN

Best known for its restored Pioneer Village with limestone grist mill, its trails flanked with a variety of limited access caves and its unique Twin Caves Boat Tours, Spring Mill State Park offers an experience that can’t be missed. Campers can choose from both modern and primitive campgrounds, and those who prefer more comforts can stay in the Spring Mill Inn.

Ocean Pond Campground, Olustee FL

Located on the north bank of Ocean Pond, a 1760-acre natural lake, the Ocean Pond Campground is one of Florida’s most popular camping spots. The park offers lakeshore camping, a boat ramp and a fishing pier. Both the Great Florida Birding Trail and Florida National Scenic Trail run through the park, making it a favorite destination for nature enthusiasts from all across the country.
