Avoid these mistakes when hiring a Wedding Photographer

Of all the pros that you’ll hire to make sure your wedding day is perfect, your photographer is among the most important. After all, they’re the one that will provide you with the pictures that you’ll reminisce over for the rest of your life. Here are a few of the biggest mistakes that couples make when they’re hiring a wedding photographer and some tips to keep in mind as you’re finding the right one for your big day.

Mistake #1: Not Talking to Your Photographer About Your Wedding Day Schedule

Before you finalize your wedding day schedule, talk to your photographer, especially if there will be pictures taken outside. Different times of day will yield entirely different photos; mid-day sun on a clear day may be harsh and result in unflattering shadows and squinty-eyed smiles, while evening sunlight creates a universally flattering warm glow on everyone. For the best pictures, get your photographer’s input on when and where you’ll get the best shots, and then build the day’s schedule around that as much as possible.

Mistake #2: Not Finding a Photographer You Click With

If you’re lucky, you’ll find an outstanding photographer who comes highly recommended. However, if after meeting them you realize that their personality sets your teeth on edge, then they’re not a good fit, no matter how fantastic their customer reviews are or how beautiful their portfolio is. You’re going to be working closely with your photographer, and tensions from a personality clash may come through in the pictures. In the months leading up to your wedding, take plenty of time to meet with as many photographers as possible to find the right one.

Mistake #3: Falling for Trends

Trends are fun, but they are, by definition, fleeting. Current trends like having one full-color item in an otherwise black and white photo or intentionally crooked photos might be having their day in the sun, but chances are that in just a couple years, trends like these will be outdated. Get a couple fun, trendy photos if you must, but try to stick with simple, classic shots that will stand the test of time.

Mistake #4: Not Getting a Second Shooter

It’s no secret that weddings are expensive, and budget-conscious couples are always on the lookout for ways to trim down on extraneous expenses. However, if there’s one area that you shouldn’t cut corners on, it’s the photography. In addition to hiring your main photographer, consider hiring a second shooter. That will provide you with another unique point of view throughout the day that you would otherwise miss out on.

Mistake #5: Forgetting to Ask for Specific Shots

After getting your pictures from your wedding day, there’s nothing worse than realizing that you’re missing pictures of key events like the first look, the first kiss or the first dance. If you have specific shots that you want, make sure that you talk to your photographer and provide them with a list of what you want.
